Lucy In The Loo - Malaysian Independent Band

A Female fronted band playing Indie Power Pop formed in Bangi in 2001.
Originally comprising of 3 Lucys, original drummer Lucy left and was replaced by Luqman. who also sings and plays guitars for the notorious Bangi band called bandbo_doh.

Sweet vocals, catchy guitars, simple rhythms. KLUE once reviewed and said that

" .....the pop party kicked off with three-piece Lucy In The Loo. A five-song set revealed this raw but ready female-fronted band to be as charming as lead singer Hana's voice, culminating in their last pop tune "Loser Lullaby" that boasted hooks as irresistable as its song title was appealing. Here's hoping their demo gets released next year." (KLUE, 19 December 2003)

Well.......That was the 'huru hara' story, now the real story:

lucy in the loo started out as a garage band, in early 2001, jamming when they had the free time and going to school at the same time. being a 3 peice band at first, the 3 of them met in school and discovered each other's love for the same type of music and decided to play music together. after 2 sleepy years, they started to get active when they got involved with a split ep project with Elmkids. A few months later, they got their very first gig and has been playing here and there ever since. growing up, the Hana listened to a whole lot of indie power pop tunes, like ash, weezer and letters to cleo and later influenced her in writing songs in the earlier days of the band. after being exposed to some lo-fi indie rock bands from the us, her influence started to change as she started to listen to Pond, Built to Spill, Modest Mouse and some other indie rock bands, which also has changed the sound of lucy in the loo in a way, but still has their distinct original sound preserved. With Hana as their
front girl on vocals and guitars, Allia on bass, Syukri on Rythm Guitars (our new member!) and Luqman on drums, lucy in the loo which once started out as an all girl band, is still considered a girl band because of Hana, the frontgirl who is the back bone, the song writer and the founder of the band.

Lucy In The Loo - Loser Lullaby

Harmacy - Malaysian Independent Band

Without much ado, I would like to point out that Ipoh’s Harmacy (at least in its current incarnation) sounds like a bunch boys who grew up with nothing else but Dinosaur Jr in their musical diet; especially the latterday version of the trio. However, if the old Dino Jr. had “the other songwriter” Lou Barlow to sometimes come in and even things out with a bit of variety, Harmacy concentrates on the J. Mascis part of the equation. This singular and unwavering obsession makes Harmacy the one and only Malaysian altar of worship to the man who responsible in introducing the once spat-upon lengthy guitar solos to indie-rock.

I loved Dino Jr. and all the post-Dino projects and I have several CDs (and the rare SST debut LP too) which I would return to time to time but do i really want to hear a bunch of kids imitating the band? Well, I don’t. Still, Harmacy is made up of four nice kids who are really earnest, spirited and unpretentious in making their music. They are NOT a bunch of kids that would latch on the current trend and promptly jumped off board when there’s no more sparkly swell on the surface and move on to the next “big” thing (look at the recent nu-metal fad for instance). Playing late-80s American indie-rock is NOT trendy, but then again “mimicking” your favourite band is not exactly commendable either.

However, if you don’t mind a spot-on photocopy edition of Dino Jr., Harmacy is very, very good. These guys can play, and they got every nuance down pat. Here To Here gives you all you want, right from the woozy guitar lines, the groggy slacker tempo, Mascis dead-pan crooning style and more. The recording is very good for a dirt cheap project; mid-range lo-fi - not too shabby, I’ll say. The CD-R also comes with full-colour pro-printed sleeves, which is very tastefully done too.

I can’t talk much about the songs though. Don’t get me wrong, they are all top-notch tunes but I just can’t write without mentioning more and more Mascis and then point to that or this Dino Jr. albums. So I would rather not talk about it, instead I’ll point out that I would love to see Harmacy build upon this strong foundation and move away into their own space and style very, very soon.

When Butterfingers started out in the early mid-90s, all I hear then was pure imitation of Nirvana, singer Emmet would even wear the very same mohair striped sweater to imitate Cobain; and boy, I hated it. But then, a few years later they grew up out of that adolescent obsession and moved on to be themselves, playing their own take on things which influenced them. Of course, they would also moved on to the majors and so on, but that’s a different story. We are talking about originality here and a hell lot of local bands really need help in that department; and at this moment in time, Harmacy is ripe for change.

Plague Of Happiness - Kawan

Free Love - Malaysian Independent Band

Free Love - started as a lo-fi band on the 1st of December 2002 in Ipoh, a small laid-back old town in Northwest Malaysia.Free Love originally began as a side-project band formed by Jay, Jay at that time was going through a hard time with his previous band that he played bass for, Bloodymary.

Free Love is hugely inspired by a number of American indie rock icons such as Sebadoh, Sonic Youth, Pavement, The Pixies, Bright Eyes, Modest Mouse, 764-Hero, Three Mile Pilot, The Preston School of Industry and many more.

All the members of Free Love have their own band as Ducktoi fronts his own indie rock combo called Muck, Hana sings and plays the guitar for her own garage power pop unit dubbed as Lucy in the Loo and Lopong is the drummer for Sgt. Weener Arms, a post math rock quartet.

We classify our music as indie rock, lo-fi, noise pop, experimental, rock n’ roll and whatever you want to call us. For us, indie rock is about being who you are. Play what you want to play, as loud or as mellow as fuck, simple or sophisticated, sloppy or clean, fast or slow and do whatever you want to fucking do with your songs. That’s indie rock!

Love the music, leave your attitude at home. Thank you.

'Free Love' consist of:

mohd JAYzuan :: vocals / guitars / harmonica
ducktoi (muck) :: guitars / vocals
ayiq (harmacy) :: drums
aie (ex-boneless mahoney / ex-muck) :: bass / vocals

Free Love - Hey Ho I Love You

Couple - Malaysian Independent Band

Couple =

the sounds of the Beatles, the Beach Boys, the Who, Big Star, Teenage Fanclub, the Raspberries, the Ramones and Weezer
+ musical technical incompetencies
+ Cheap music instruments & equipment (Hail Korean Guitars! Viva Epiphone!)
+ record songs using a laptop with budget less than RM 10
+ Sweet Guitar Pop to Rock your socks off!!!

The Couple story began way back in 1995, when Aidil, formerly of Pet Hate Minors (which also featured Al-Kautsar, bassist for ALAM) hooked up with An as a twosome of just Guitar and Drums similar to the White Stripes in college (hence the moniker "Couple" - no! not because it's a gay band!!) and released their out of print demo "In Love".

The recording session takes 3 weeks (1 week recording + 2 weeks mixing). The band got its name while watching television series(PEJA). So then came Colours Without Ink. Yesterday - Colours Without Ink

Lyric - Yesterday from Colours Without Ink

Yesterday when first met you
I thought it’s gonna be something new
But when discover your attitude
It sucks…sucks…sucks…

Yesterday when love is over
I thought it’s gonna be all over
But you remind me about your world
It sucks…sucks…you sucks…

Pre-chorus:

I don’t care about you anymore
I’m standing in front of the door

c/o: Well I think that
I will never fall in love again
And I will never miss the time we spent

Well I think that
I will never fall in love again
And I will never miss the
Time we spent

Wishes - Colours Without Ink

Lyric - Wishes from Colours Without Ink

I wish I’ll be in star
I thought I can be there
I will make it surprise to you

I wanna hold your hand
I want and to decide
I wanna to forget, what’ve you said

And, maybe not tonight
And, maybe not for that
Of cause you had nothing for too bad

And since it comes too tight
We’ll with for that all to night
But nothing had willing by my side

c/o: Is that what u thinks so close for you
Well…..is not for you and us to cry

Song & lyrics by: Yuss

Bittersweet - Malaysian Independent Band

Formed in mid-July, Bittersweet began its life quite entirely by accident as a mere meeting up of its two founding members to talk of music. Deciding to combine their dedication and love for the same genres to produce a dual effort, both members decided to form a band, taking advantage of the fact that Zabil being on holiday would allow them some time to record an EP. Their passion for music is evident in the fact that recording took place after only a few days of rehearsals with acoustic guitars at home. Limited time didn’t allow for a thorough search for a complete line-up though, and none was found in time for the recording which was possible through Herry’s expertise with the drums and Zabil’s proficiency in bass. Their maiden effort almost finished, the bandmates found a keyboardist in the form of Emay who promptly agreed to provide the necessary assistance to conclude the recording. With the final touches completed, the EP was handed over to Aidil of band Couple who gave it a listen and arranged for the band to be under their current label, Petprojects. The name Bittersweet was inspired by 'the verve' song ‘Bittersweet Symphony’.
